You automatically have health insurance if you are:
- in the asylum procedure → through Grundversorgung (basic care)
- have refugee status or subsidiary protection → through BMS or employment
- have a Duldung (tolerated stay after asylum rejection) → through Grundversorgung
- working with a legal status → through your job (ÖGK insurance)
With ÖGK insurance:
- You can go to any public doctor or hospital that accepts ÖGK
- Private doctors are not covered
- ÖGK pays for your doctor visits
- For medicines or hospital stays, you might pay a small part yourself (Selbstbehalt)
No Insurance, registration or legal status?!
- Even if you are not insured, you can still get medical help in Austria. There are free or low-cost clinics, especially in big cities (see below)
- Undocumented individuals are also entitled to emergency care at public hospitals, though non-emergency services may incur costs they must arrange or pay later .
