Information for LGBTQIA+ People and Asylum in Austria

Last update : September 2025

Being queer is a valid reason for asylum!
Here you find information about:

  • Asylum Procedure for Queer People
  • Support
  • Housing
  • Health

If you are queer – lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex, or non-binary – and you face persecution because of your queerness, you can apply for asylum in Austria.

Being queer is a valid reason for asylum.

Information about Asylum Procedure

  • Very Important: Tell the BFA You Are Queer – In the First Interview!
  • When you apply for asylum, you will have an interview with the asylum office (BFA).
  • This interview is your chance to explain why you are asking for protection.
  • You must tell them clearly that you are queer during this first interview.
  • This is very important for your asylum case. If you don’t say it, it can be harder to prove later.
  • If you were too scared or didn’t know that queerness is a reason for asylum, you can still say it later and submit a new asylum application (called a follow-up request) — even if your first case is still open.

Get Help Early
If you are queer and need asylum, get support as soon as possible.
There are organizations that will help you:

  • Queer Base in Vienna → queerbase.at
  • HOSI groups in other regions (e.g., HOSI Salzburg, HOSI Tirol)
  • Caritas or Diakonie – ask for their queer support teams

What Helps Your Case

  • You don’t have to talk about everything in your private life. It’s enough to say you are lesbian, gay, bi, trans, or queer – only share what feels safe.
Still, evidence helps your asylum case. For example:
  • Photos at queer bars or events
  • Screenshots of messages or dating chats
  • Proof of going to Queer Base or HOSI events

Housing for Queer Asylum Seekers

  • In Vienna, there are special places to live for queer people – through Queer Base or Diakonie.
  • In other parts of Austria, you usually live in shared asylum housing. But you can try – with help from Queer Base – to apply for a transfer to Vienna.
  • Some other cities have social workers who support queer people, but safe queer housing is not guaranteed. People try their best to help you.

Health & Support

Queer people in Austria can get medical support from queer-friendly doctors and therapists who respect their identity and needs – for example through:

  • queermed.at – queer-friendly doctors and therapists
  • Also ask Queer Base, Diakonie or Caritas for advice
  • In Vienna: Dr. Breitenecker – supports trans health

You are not alone.

There is support. You are allowed to be exactly who you are – and you deserve safety.
