Tusla, the Child and Family Agency is responsible for children under the age of 18 who arrive in Ireland without a parent or guardian.
When a minor applies for asylum, an age assessment is conducted with the assistance of Tusla. Where it is determined that the applicant is a child, Tusla takes responsibility for the case. They assist the child with an international protection application. However, often children do not receive a decision on their international protection application until they turn 18.
If the child has family members in Ireland but they did not arrive with them, Tusla will conduct an assessment to see if the child can be reunited with these family members.
If you have applied for asylum and you are between the ages of 16 and 18, you can also apply to work, subject to certain conditions. See the section 4.2 on access to work.
Tusla handles the accommodation, schooling and welfare of the child and a case worker is appointed to each child.
