Being undocumented

Last update : January 2025

Being undocumented in Ireland means that you do not have a residence permission in the State. The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) is the main NGO that works with undocumented people in Ireland.

Working and PPS Numbers: There is a serious risk in applying for a PPS number when you are undocumented. There are many undocumented people who might continue to work in Ireland and pay taxes, however, they are legally not allowed to work.
If you have a problem with your employer, including if they have not paid you, you may be able to be compensated. Please contact the MRCI for assistance.
Healthcare: If you are undocumented you can still access healthcare and medical treatment. You might be asked for your PPS number in a hospital, but they should still treat you even if you do not have a PPS number.

Education: Your child can attend both primary and secondary school and this is free of charge.

Social welfare: You cannot access social welfare in Ireland. You might be able to apply

Regularisation: Ireland has had a few regularisation campaigns, but these have been once off and it is difficult to know if there will be another one. There is not currently an open regularisation scheme. The last Regularisation Scheme in 2022 opened on January 31st 2022 and closed on July 31st 2022.
