Since 1st July 2013, there is a new law in place regarding healthcare for undocumented residencies in sweden. It came about mostly thanks to the medical workers joint statement that they would “not continue to make differences between their patients” to which the government, by then, answered “if they will not follow the rules, it is better to change them”.

Since then you have the right to healthcare – for example if you have urgent symptoms, chronic illness, anxiety or pain, disregarding any ‘paper-status’. When you seek healthcare the treatment you need will be assessed by a doctor. Adults have the right to healthcare that “cannot wait”, a vague formulation that is interpreted quite differently depending on facility. Women have the right to prenatal care, free of charge, and care when giving birth. The right to abortion is also ensured. All contraceptive counselling is free of charge.
